Slurry Seal:
A mixture of emulsified asphalt, well-graded fine aggregate, mineral filler or other additives, and water. A slurry
seal will fill minor cracks, restore a uniform surface texture, and restore friction values.
Seal Coat:
A thin surface treatment used to improve the surface texture and protect an asphalt surface.
Slurry Seal and Seal Coat are mixtures of fine aggregates, mineral filler (at times), emulsified asphalt, and
water that provides waterproofing, flexibility, and adhesive properties to bind the aggregates in the pavement.
As stated by the well respected Asphalt Institute, “…asphalt slurry seal is effective in both the preventative
and corrective maintenance of asphalt pavement surfaces. It’s timely application will prevent surface distress
caused by oxidation of the asphalt, loss of matrix, and embrittlement of the pavement mixture. Applied to
surfaces of older pavements that are showing distress, it will seal cracks, stop raveling and loss of matrix, and
make open surfaces impermeable to air and water.”
